Top Dive Spots in the Cayman Islands

March 26th, 2018

Touted as among the world’s top dive destinations,  the Cayman Islands offers many opportunities to explore the underwater beauty, exotic marine life and sheer drop-offs, all with an  experienced dive company.

Diving is practically a national pastime in Cayman. In 2008, the government launched a Dive 365 initiative to offer visitors diverse opportunities to learn about Cayman’s underwater environment without harming the marine life.

Divers may see everything from dramatic walls, to wrecks and reefs, even sinkholes and rubble patches favoured by tiny critters.

Some of the top dive spots in Grand Cayman -

1) USS Kittiwake Shipwreck

Kittiwake wreck diving in Grand Cayman will be a memorable experience. The Kittiwake, a U.S. Navy submarine rescue ship for nearly 50 years, is the most recent shipwreck to be sunk off the coast of Grand Cayman. In 2011, after being made more accessible to divers with large holes cut to allow swim-throughs, doors and even floors removed, the ship was sunk and became an artificial reef. It attracts goliath grouper, silver-sides, schooling horse-eye jacks, and barracuda. It’s the go-to place for many divers who visit or live in Cayman.

2) Hepp’s Pipeline

The colourful coral walls best define Hepp’s pipeline. A mini wall formation, home to a variety of eels, morays and vipers, makes it an interesting dive spot. With the depth of up to 70 feet, this site is accessible as a shore dive (permission for access is required) as well as by boat through  Cayman Islands dive operators

3) Orange Canyon

Here you can see schools of horse-eye jacks and colourful sponges, including the giant orange elephant ear sponges. Maximum depth is 100 feet. Be sure to bring a camera to capture all of your exquisite memories.

4) Eagle Ray Pass

It’s the place to see spotted eagle rays and great coral canyons, deep sand pits and huge overhangs that form a dramatic archway to the north wall. There have also been sightings of nurse and reef sharks and the occasional hammerhead!

5) Big Tunnels

Tagged as one of the best Grand Cayman scuba diving sites, Big Tunnels will take you through various twists and turns. It was discovered by divers in the early 1980s and is located just a few minutes from Seven Mile Beach. Narrow canyons lead to a cavernous swim through in the Big Tunnel, with black coral and ropey sponges.

Our experienced staff will make sure you have the safest and most rewarding dive trip possible. We offer instruction and cater the dive trips to your experience level.
